Dancing with the Stars of Orlando

On Wednesday, December 20, 2006, the Winter Park and Orlando studios hosted the first “Dancing with the Stars of Orlando” charity dance contest at the Orlando World Center Marriott.  In addition to providing a festive holiday celebration and recognition for our students, the event successfully raised over $6000 for local charities.   

Each of the following celebrities graciously donated their time and energy to learning two dance routines for the contest:

Andrea Jackson – Anchor of CW’s “The Daily Buzz”

David Maus – Orlando’s largest car dealer

Joe Oliver – Anchor of WESH Channel 2 News

Frank Nobilo – PGA Champion and Golf Channel Announcer

Mel Taylor – Disc Jockey from O’Rock 105.9fm

Christine Van Blokland – Reporter for Fox Morning News

Costuming for the celebrities and our female instructors was provided by Coco’s Ballroom Boutique.  Coco’s partnership with Chrisanne and Randall Designs provided the ladies the extraordinary opportunity to wear dresses featured in the national television shows “Dancing with the Stars” and “Ballroom Bootcamp” ~ and they looked INCREDIBLE!! 

THE BIG NIGHT . . . The evening began with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, general dancing and a silent auction.  After dinner, we celebrated the accomplishments of our graduates, presenting them with certificates and medals.  Our heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to all of our graduates for their successes!!!

Then, the competition began.  All of the celebrities and their instructors made an impressive showing.  While the judges’ scores meant a great deal to our competitors, it came down to the audience to decide who our winner would be… 

A “ballot box” for each celebrity and their charity was set up.  The audience was able to vote via ballot (one per person), or by making donations in the form of cash or checks, each dollar donated counted as two votes for that celebrity.  When all the votes and donations had been tallied, we announced our winner, David Maus.  He had raised $1,746 for his charity!   We capped off the evening with a fabulous professional showcase featuring our talented instructors.

Each celebrity’s charity was presented with the amount in their ballot box.  The proceeds from the evening, including our silent auction, went to the winner’s charity.  After all was said and done, a total of $6398 was raised to benefit six charities.  These are:

Habitat for Humanity

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Florida

B.A.S.E. Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation

The event was such a great success that our second annual “Dancing with the Stars of Orlando” is planned for Wednesday, December 5, 2007.

Christine Van Blokland and Johnny Boulware pushed our "Buttons" with a sexy Cha Cha.
